Had I not created my whole world, I would have certainly died in other people’s. (Anaïs Nin)
I am a psychotherapist and diplomate in clinical social work, geographically located in Sacramento, California. I have been practicing as an independent Licensed Clinical Social Worker for over 20 years, and more generally have been a social worker for over 30 years, conducting education, research, consulting, and clinical work. I work with people living with chronic health and mental health conditions, with those struggling with their identities and making meaning in life, with those negotiating sexuality and gender, and with adults having un-/expected challenges in relationships, work, and beyond.
In addition to private practice, I hold a Ph.D. in Social Welfare and several synergizing positions. I am a Professor of Social Work in an accredited School of Social Work. I consult with license-seeking clinicians and community and state organizations, provide trainings and workshops, teach and mentor graduate students, do public speaking and invited talks, and I conduct and publish critical health research. Prior to private practice, I have worked in both in- & out-patient medical/psychiatric settings as well as community-based organizations, all of which focused on trauma, mental health, and chronic health conditions including HIV/AIDS.
Alongside my professional work, it is important to know that I am not a robot. Rather, I am an engaged citizen committed to social justice, health equity, and community wellbeing. I am also domestically partnered in a bilingual, interethnic, and transcultural relationship, and I am a coparent for two children.

Online Therapy used eight key factors, including credentials, specializations, cost, and accessibility, to evaluate the top 15 therapists in Sacramento.
The National Association of Social Workers (NASW), California Chapter, named Dr. Argüello the Social Worker of the Year, 2023, for the State of California. Dr. Argüello was nominated by his peers for his accomplishments, multi-level benefits to the public, students, and interprofessional colleagues, as well as contributions to the profession. In particular, he was recognized for exemplary and meritorious social work practice, inclusive of critical pedagogy, impactful leadership, public service, scholarship of teaching, and for on-going community-embedded clinical work.
I offer a therapeutic modality called Ketamine Assisted Psychotherapy (KAP): the use of ketamine as a complement to psychotherapy. I deliver KAP in my practice in partnership with an organization called Journey Clinical, which has a specialized medical team that determines medical eligibility for KAP, prescribes ketamine lozenges, and supports me in monitoring outcomes. If interested, contact me to discuss eligibility and next steps. Also, I am happy to discuss KAP if you already have a psychiatrist. You can find more information about KAP and Journey Clinical.
I am more than happy to have a brief introductory phone call (free of charge) to understand what may be currently going on for you, discuss my practice and approach, and see if there may be a good fit. Please call: 206.353.8607.
